Role Overview
Establishing and maintaining best standard of vehicle movement within the yard, providing a full and thorough shunting service is delivered to the depot. Responsibility for instigating all appropriate policies, procedures, processes and legislative changes for all aspects of yard shunting
Role Requirements
- Review operational progress on a regular basis during the shift and reschedule vehicles and activities as appropriate to achieve planned work in the most cost effective way and, provide details of any changes to colleagues during the shift and at shift changeover.
- Allocate vehicles within an appropriate timescale and to the correct loading bays to ensure that product is loaded and unloaded for the correct customers.
- Organise and supervise all vehicle movements on and off loading bays and around the yard to optimise the utilisation of vehicles to ensure safe delivery of the daily plan.
- Organise or undertake all trailer and unit swaps in accordance with Company Health and Safety procedures to ensure safe delivery of the daily plan.
- Make recommendations for improvements in the use of vehicles based on sufficient, valid and reliable information, which take into account the impact of such changes on other parts of the operation.
- Continuously monitor the use and quality of resources, for example, vehicles, loading bays, yard space etc) to ensure consistency and cost effectiveness of service delivery and report to the Fleet Manager on variations from the expected standard.
- Take prompt corrective action where problems with the use of resources within area of control are identified and ensure that these changes are recorded and reported to the Fleet Manager.
- Ensure that all fridge units are running and set to the correct temperature prior to the trailer being loaded
Key Role Responsibilities:
Health & Safety – commitment to safety
- Understands, encourages and complies with company/site safety policies and procedures; completes all required training and takes personal responsibility for the safety of themselves and others
- Understand and advise drivers on the Health and Safety Policy, Company Safety Rules and statutory requirements for all areas under direct control.
- Ensure all daily, weekly and monthly yard related checks are completed to the appropriate standard.
- Ensure all records of accidents and incidents (personal and vehicle) are completed to the required standard.
- Assist with conducting initial investigations into all accidents and dangerous occurrences.
- Assist with ensuring that all remedial action is taken in respect of all reported defects and complaints relating to health and safety.
- Implement all vehicle defect reporting systems and procedures and ensure that appropriate response and remedial/corrective action is taken where defects are reported and highlighted.
- Ensure that the pre-start check system is maintained by all drivers of Company vehicles.
- Understand and advise others on the regulations governing the use of Company vehicles on the roads.
- Check incoming vehicles for defects on the units and trailers and report defective vehicles to the Transport Manager.
- Carry out all minor repairs on units and trailers, for example, replace electric and air lines, replace bulbs and replace minor consumable parts.
- Collect and deliver units and trailers from the vehicle repair shop.
- Organise vehicle repairers and tyre companies in the event of a breakdown when the Fleet Supervisor is unavailable or the breakdown occurs out of hours.
- Inspect the inside of trailers and wash trailer interiors when required so that they conform to the standards required by customers for carrying their product.
- Inspect the cleanliness of all units as they are shunted around the yard and report those that do not reach the standard required by Company, to the Transport Manager.
